Inspire
Hey, I'm Eric Yu and I volunteered at StudentRND in the summer of 2010. One of the things that impressed me the most at StudentRND was the Cupcake CNC 3D printer. It could print out almost any shape, but it jammed frequently and could only print small objects. I knew about the RepRap, a well-known 3D printer design that was more capable than the Cupcake, and this year I decided to build it.
I could not have attempted my project without StudentRND's help - they gave me the tools, funds, and help I needed to do it.
Create
A RepRap is a low cost open source rapid prototyping system that is capable of producing its own parts and can therefore be replicated easily.
Learn
I had never constructed anything of this complexity before. From building the RepRap, I learned many things - both technical skills such as soldering and programming an Arduino controller, and non-technical ones like keeping track of and purchasing required components.
